Abstract

Aim. To explore the extent of sick leave and factors related to sick leave in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD). Method. A cross sectional study was carried out in adult patients with AD; variables were sick leave; severity of AD (with the patient oriented eczema measure); quality of life (Skindex) and social occupational complaints (Dutch Work Reintegration Questionnaire). Results. 120 patients were included with moderate to very severe AD; preliminary results showed that 42% experienced high impact on quality of life and 23-42% had above average to high scores on psychosocial work related complaints. In the previous two weeks, 13% of all patients took sick leave due to AD; 44% took sick leave due to AD in the last year. Conclusion. Preliminary results showed that sick leave in patients with AD is a common problem, symptom interference appeared to influence sick leave.© 2014 De Nederlandse Vereniging voor Dermatologie en Venereologie.
