Abstract

In this chapter, infections of the central nervous system by viruses, Toxoplasma, and Treponema are reviewed. In addition, infections caused by enterovirus, parechovirus, parvovirus B19, rotavirus, varicella, lymphocytic choriomeningitis, mosquito-borne alphaviruses (West Nile, chikungunya), and flaviviruses (dengue, Zika) may cause fetal or neonatal illness, with significant neurological consequences. The role of SARS-CoV-2 is still uncertain. The neonatal disorders caused by these latter organisms are reviewed after the discussion of the TORCH syndromes.
