Abstract

To facilitate the molecular epidemiology of vancomycin resistance, we undertook a detailed study on the molecular diversity of Tn1546-like elements in enterococci from man and animals. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis and DNA sequencing of the vanA-transposon of 97 VRE revealed 22 different Tn1546 types. Identical Tn1546 types were found among humans and farm animals in the Netherlands suggesting the sharing of a common vancomycin resistance gene pool. Thus direct comparison of the vancomycin resistance determinants will give us more insight in the transmission routes of vancomycin resistance genes.
