Abstract
Over the last 30 years, government promotion of sports has had both positive and negative consequences. In order to understand the undesirable consequences of sports participation, a registration of sports injuries has been started. Previously, sports injuries in the Netherlands have been registered by different institutions and in many different ways. The government policy behind the registration of sports injuries has changed frequently in the past 25 years. Such changes have had consequences for the contents and methods as well as for the comparability and compatibility of results of the national survey entitled Accidents and Physical Activity in the Netherlands. Starting with a historic overview of the effects of change on the registration of sports injuries, some large differences between various population estimates are explained. The overview also offers a future perspective on sports injuries registration enabling the presentation of straightforward, non-conflicting injury data.
