Abstract

Maternal obesity is frequently associated with (gestational) diabetes mellitus. Both are independent risk factors for poor maternal and perinatal outcome with synergistic effects. Therefore, screening for previously undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes and for gestational diabetes is of utmost importance. Strict glucose threshold values should be applied. Treatment of diabetes should consist of a healthy lifestyle, reduction of weight gain during pregnancy and medical treatment if indicated. Currently, metformin and glyburide are frequently used, but there are concerns about their safety.
