Abstract

Hypertension is one of the most prevalent cardiovascular risk factors. Globally, 34 % of adults worldwide have hypertension and this number is rising. Despite this high prevalence and its associated complications, control of hypertension is far from adequate. Data from NHANES show that only 34 % of the patients with hypertension have their blood pressure under control, defined as a level below 140/90 mmHg. This frequent occurrence in failure of treating hypertension can partly be attributed to physicians’ negligence as well as patient noncompliance to a lifelong pharmacological therapy for a mainly asymptomatic disease. In a small subgroup of patients (±10–15 %), a secondary cause for hypertension can be demonstrated. However, a subgroup of about 15–20 % of patients is truly resistant to medical therapy.
