The health of the Dutch population is doing well; people in the Netherlands are living longer, maintain a good health for longer, and are fifth in the world ranking of happiest countries. In recent years, the increase of the legal age for alcohol and tobacco sales, the expansion of the vaccination program, and the high compliance rates in colon cancer screening have contributed to better health outcomes. Growing socio-economic health differences, the declining vaccination rate, unhealthy lifestyles and insufficient capacity in youth care are among the most important public health challenges. In order to meet these challenges, a change in the training of doctors is necessary. More attention needs to be paid to competences in the field of societal responsibility and collaboration, as well as to collaboration between doctors in the clinic, primary care and public health. An investment in social medicine residency training is also important.
