Abstract

For more than 15 years hysteroscopic sterilization with Essure devices has been very popular in the Western world and in some countries even became the preferred method of permanent contraception. However, over the years late adverse effects have increasingly been reported in most cases leading to request of the patients for removal of the devices, which ultimately culminated in the withdrawal from the market. The large variety of reported symptoms are discussed, and an attempt is made to find a possible correlation with the devices. The safe diagnostic and surgical management of problems related to Essure devices are discussed. Hopefully, this chapter will contribute to learning lessons for the development of new hysteroscopic sterilization methods in the future.
