Abstract

The maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) is one of the most frequently used and well known measures of aerobic fitness within exercise physiology and sports medicine: The VO2 max is a product of heart rate, stroke volume and the arterial-venous oxygen difference. In many patients as well in healthy persons the VO2 max is an important predictor of mortality and morbidity. The maximal oxygen uptake can be best measured with a maximal (or cardiopulmonary) exercise test in combination with direct respiratory gas analysis. This article will discuss predictions of the VO2max and recommendations will be made for execution and description of maximal exercise tests.
