Abstract
Influenza involves a high disease burden. In Dutch primary health care a sentinel surveillance system is in charge, but little is known about influenza in nursing homes. Early 2007, eight nursing homes participated in a pilot influenza surveillance project. They sent in 23 samples from patients with influenza like illness (ILI) and 13 from patients with other acute respiratory infections (ARI) for virological diagnostics. Influenza virus was found in 35% of ILI patients and in 31% of ARI patients, which was comparable to primary health care rates. This surveillance in nursing homes will be extended to a network in which, in addition to influenza, other infectious diseases will be recorded. This is relevant for good nursing home care and for the public health.
