Abstract

Hyperpigmented macules in children can be the first clinical sign of an underlying condition or syndrome. Café au lait maculae and lentigines are well-known examples. Café au lait maculae may be associated with syndromes such as neurofibromatosis type 1, Legius syndrome and McCune-Albright syndrome. Lentigines are seen in Peutz-Jeghers syndrome and Noonan syndrome with multiple lentigines (LEOPARD syndrome). Early diagnosis is important to agree on appropriate screening and surveillance for these children.
