Abstract

Several health benefits have been ascribed to dietary oestrogens isoflavones and lignans, the so-called phytoestrogens, because of their capability to bind to the oestrogen receptor. After addressing what phytoestrogens are and in which foods they occur, the chapter will provide the current evidence for effects on cardiovascular disease risk, breast cancer risk, bone health and cognitive function. For definitive answers, randomised clinical trials are needed, which are still lacking. For isoflavones, effects may differ depending on timing of exposure and capability to produce the more active metabolite equol.
