Abstract

A female patient diagnosed as having M. Dejerine Sottas, a hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN), visited our outdoor department for tinnitus and hearing loss. Inspection of the ears did not show pathology. Tone audiogram showed sensorineural hearing loss. Speech discrimination was nil. Because of her origin from the Southeast of Europe, and recent publications concerning hearing loss in a group of Bulgarian gypsies, our patient was referred to a Medical Genetics Center. She turned out to be the first patient in the Netherlands diagnosed with HMSN-Lom.
