Abstract

Ototoxicity is characterized by tinnitus, hearing loss and vestibular complaints. Systemically administered ototoxic drugs are: Aminoglycosides, platina-based chemotherapeutic drugs, loop diuretics, salicylates, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, quinine en erythromycin. Despite the different ototoxic mechanisms of these drugs, abnormalities in the cochlea and in particular in the outer hair cells are found. Ototoxicity may be prevented by pharmacokinetic control and maybe by administration of protective drugs. Furthermore, early detection can be done by audiologic monitoring.
