Abstract

All modes of respiratory support, whether invasive or non-invasive, used in a spontaneously breathing or intubated patient, or delivered through an oro-nasal device or a tracheostomy or endotracheal tube, have one thing in common: they all deliver gases. These gases are effectively therapies, with respective doses, methods of administration, therapeutic value, and adverse effects. In this chapter we will look specifically at oxygen and helium-oxygen (heliox) mix.
