Abstract
With increasing age, there is a decreasing probability of continued pregnancy with the application of assisted reproduction techniques. As a result, the question is whether age limits for treatment should be established. With the improved probability of success per cycle for IVF treatment and the determination of success factors for the 41-45 age group as well, the absolute age limit of 41 (or 40) may be abandoned. A literature review and ongoing research reveal prognostic data that can guide the treatment in this group (particularly indicators of the quantitative ovarian reserve (antral-follicle count) and the response in the first cycle). Whether an IUI stimulation treatment must first be offered to women over the age of 40 appears to be dubious.
