Abstract
The aim of this study is to identify problems at the workplace which employees and employers experience when an employee is diagnosed with cancer. Next, to describe which solutions they have chosen and, finally, what the (specific) needs of employer and employee are. A literature review was performed and focus groups were conducted with employees and interviews with employers. Employees, above all, need understanding, support, and more knowledge about cancer and work in the workplace. In cooperation with the employer and occupational physician they want a tailored return to work plan with a focus on long-term effects of diagnosis and treatment. Employers want more support from the occupational physician or an external expert for themselves and for their employee. Also, there is a need for less rigid legal regulations with more flexibility and customization. In addition, employers need adequate information on reintegration opportunities and financial compensation.
