Abstract
The Calibration 2000 project aims at the harmonization of laboratory data of as many laboratory disciplines as possible using calibration materials. The project is managed by a steering group and eight task forces. All task forces follow the same general project design for the development and application of suitable calibrators. The commutability of calibrators with patient material is tested in a so called twin study design. Laboratory couples are asked to exchange patient samples and to analyze those samples together with potential calibration materials. In this paper the general strategy is outlined as well as the goals and action program of the Calibration 2000 project. Also the progress of the various task forces in their search for suitable calibrators is described.
