Abstract
Anterograde transport through the secretory pathway is critical for the delivery of most of the integral plasma membrane and secreted proteins. Although enormous progress has been made in the identification of the transport machinery between the different organelles of the secretory pathway, there are still no clear consensus on how newly synthesized proteins traverse the Golgi apparatus in a manner that allows their processing and sorting while keeping the structural integrity of the organelle. In this article, we outline the different models currently proposed in the field.
