Abstract
An inventory was made of the tasks and of the time-expenditure of the implementation of the new guidelines of the Dutch College of General Practitioners on Diabetes Mellitus Type 2. This inventory enables general practitioners (GP) to determine if the guidelines can be implemented in daily clinical practice. The time-expenditure of the tasks for the care for known patients with type 2 diabetes, the organization of protocolized care, and the screening on type 2 diabetes was assessed. The application of the new guidelines requires 82 hours during the first year (53 hours protocolized care, 16 hours for screening and 13 hours for the organization of care). In the following years the number of known diabetics will double. Consequently, the total time expenditure will increase to 122 hours per year. By using this inventory, every individual general practitioner can determine the annual time-expenditure of the implementation of the new guidelines of the Dutch College of General Practitioners on Diabetes Mellitus Type 2. Then they can decide if implementation of these guidelines is feasible.
