Abstract
The indication for extracorporeal removal of toxic substances is restricted to situations where symptomatic treatment is not sufficient. In order to be dialyzable, a toxic agent must be largely unbound and water soluble and must have a low molecular weight and a small volume of distribution. Unfortunately, this is not the case with most drugs used in psychiatric patients. Haemodialysis is preferred over haemofiltration. For few specific drugs haemoperfusion is the most effective technique.
