Abstract
This case report describes a 27 year old male international korfball player with a deep-venous thrombosis of the axillo-clavicular system. This case concerns a rare diagnosis, which, if not recognized, might cause local and systemic damage being persistent. Thrombosis in this area is predominantly seen in overthrowing athletes who perform repetitive hyper abduction and exorotation movements with the shoulder, like in korfball and basketball. The costoclavicular space might get narrowed by muscular hypertrophy; the vascular wall might get damaged by repetitive micro traumata caused by above mentioned movements. Anamnesis describes sudden swelling and venous drawing of the arm after intensive training. Diagnosis is usually made by contrast flexography. Axillo-clavicular thrombosis is treated by catheter trombolysis followed by 3 months anticoagulants. In case of a relapse costoclavicular decompression is performed. Prognosis is usually favourable. Power training exercise should be avoided afterwards.
