Educating for Open Science across disciplines: opportunities and challenges in university teaching

Research output: Contribution to conferenceOtherAcademic

Abstract

In the coming years, Open Science (OS) needs to find its way into the academic curricula of at all levels of education (bachelor, master, PhD, and Continuing Education). In this session we will discuss and share our ideas on how core Open Science values shared across all disciplines can be translate into concrete educational strategies that fit the specific context of different (inter)disciplinary programs at different levels.

The session will build on our Utrecht University project ‘Transferable pedagogies for an Open Science mindset and skillset’. This unique interdisciplinary collaboration of OS educators representing all faculties of Utrecht University was recently awarded a major grant which allows the project to run for the next three years.

We will invite participants in the session to write down and share their experiences in integrating OS in their teaching. The goal of the session is first to explore the differences in OS teaching initiatives amongst participants and use these examples to articulate and discuss discipline-specific interpretations of an Open Science mindset and skillset. We will discuss if the participants see discipline-specific interpretations of the Open Science mindset and skillset as obstacles for OS education.

Next, we will share how we see differences between disciplines as a powerful instrument for learning. The virtues in Open Science, such as quality, integrity, transparency, equity, fairness, and collective benefit are shared amongst all disciplines. In our project we will identify how this common ground can be translated into concrete Open Science educational activities that fit discipline-specific practices and values. In our view the discipline-transcending characteristics of Open Science offer unique opportunities to break down silos and build bridges in academic education.

Finally, we will invite participants to connect their local Open Science teaching initiatives to the larger (inter)nation ambition of educating for Open Science, by becoming a member of the online community for Open Science educators and sharing their Open Science educational resources on Edusources.nl.
