Abstract
Dysfunctional voiding (DV), the involuntary pelvic floor muscle contraction during micturition, affects both children and adults and often leads to mental health issues. Its multifactorial etiology includes incorrect toileting posture and genetic predisposition. The developmental trajectory of DV remains unclear due to a lack of consensus on definition and diagnosis. Some studies suggest DV may persist into adulthood despite childhood treatment, or childhood DV may predispose individuals to lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) later in life. Moreover, LUTS appear to increase the risk of mental health issues. The absence of an explicit request for care may warrant active patient monitoring by healthcare providers, due to potential risks of LUTS and mental health issues. Further research is needed for conclusive understanding.
