Abstract
Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is associated with human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) infection. In African-endemic KS a non-sexual route of transmission from mother to child is plausible with a gradual increase of HHV-8 seropositivity with increasing age of children. In epidemic KS sexual transmission was assumed, because of the higher incidence in men who have sex with men (MSM). In recent studies HHV-8 DNA was detected mainly in saliva, to a much lesser extent in peripheral blood mononuclear cells and none in genital fluids, plasma, or serum. The main route of HHV-8 transmission in endemic and epidemic KS is saliva and this mode of transmission may also be important in classic KS.
