Abstract

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus has become a serious problem in hospitals all over the world. The presence of the MEC-a-gene results in resistance to all betalactam antibiotics, which diminishes the treatment opportunities. Recently, resistance to vancomycin, the cornerstone of treatement of MRSA, has been reported. In The Netherlands the MRSA-rate is still low, due to a national control program. The essential components of this strategy are: detection by screening, isolation of patients tranferred from foreign hospitals and eradication of carriage.
