Abstract
A 53-year-old female was seen in the emergency department after she experienced acute pain in her left heel while playing tennis. The diagnosis ankle distortion was made, which was treated using a bandage. One week later she consulted a doctor specialized in sports medicine, because of persistent pain and inability to walk. A rupture of the Achilles tendon was diagnosed, which was treated conservatively. This case report demonstrates that a rupture of the Achilles tendon may be missed at its first presentation. The rupture of the Achilles tendon is a clinical diagnosis. Every case of acute pain resulting from sprinting or jumping and loss of flexion in the ankle joint, is highly suspect for an Achilles tendon rupture. When an Achilles tendon rupture is diagnosed and promptly treated, the prognosis is good. A patient with an unrecognized Achilles tendon rupture can have disabling symptoms for a long time.
