Abstract

An interdisciplinary, six-month program has been developed within the Graduate School of Life Sciences of Utrecht University in the Netherlands. The Life Sciences & Society program brings together master’s students from all corners of the Life Sciences, from Environmental Biology to Immunity and Infection. The aim of this program is to teach students the importance of incorporating the societal perspective into research design, thereby increasing the impact of their work and really meeting our society’s needs.

During the program, students research a societal problem together with an external stakeholder. In parallel, they follow different theoretical modules during which they acquire knowledge about relevant topics, such as Open Science, Diversity Perspectives and Global & Planetary Health. The structure of the program allows them to incorporate the new theoretical knowledge directly into their project. The project results in an advisory report for the stakeholder including recommendations to further tackle the problem.
