Abstract

Cochrane reviews are high-quality systematic reviews of research in healthcare and health policy. A systematic review attempts to identify, appraise, and synthesize all the empirical evidence that meets pre-specified eligibility criteria to answer a given research question. Researchers conducting systematic reviews use explicit methods aimed at minimizing bias, in order to produce more reliable findings that can be used to inform decision making. The Cochrane Collaboration has been instrumental in the development and promotion of systematic review methodology and has produced over 7,000 reviews. In this entry the background of the Cochrane Collaboration, the key steps of a Cochrane review, and how Cochrane and Cochrane reviews came to have a role in health communication are discussed.
