Abstract

This chapter reviews the unique aspects of the management of bipolar disorder in older adults including psychosocial and pharmacological treatments. Particular attention is drawn to the increased prevalence of medical comorbidities, cognitive impairment, and the impact of polypharmacy and drug interactions. Research evidence to guide clinical decision-making is very limited, and the chapter discusses the appropriate therapeutic guidelines based on extrapolations from mixed-age studies and case series. Clinical vignettes illustrate some of the delicate issues involved in balancing mood stability with the medical, neurological, and cognitive vulnerabilities of an older population.
