Abstract
Chronic idiopathic axonal polyneuropathy (CIAP) comprises around one-third of chronic polyneuropathy patients, with no risk factor or cause identified after extensive diagnostic workup. It is characterized by predominantly sensory symptoms and signs, in a length-dependent distribution, following a slowly progressive course and patients remain ambulant. Diagnostic evaluation includes laboratory tests to rule out other risk factors and causes and nerve conduction studies to rule out demyelinating polyneuropathy. There is no evidence-based therapy to reduce or halt disease progression, but management may involve assistive walking devices and symptomatic pain treatment.
