This retrospective study aimed to evaluate whether hygienic well being of patients with a non-functional hand due to spastic paralysis based on cerebral palsy or stroke was improved by surgery. From 1999 until 2004, 14 patients were treated surgically in University Medical Center Utrecht. Surgery aimed to improve hygiene by correction of the wrist and finger deformity. Improvement of hand function was not purpose of this treatment. All patients experienced a considerable improvement of personal hygienic well being. A significant better position of the wrist and fingers and improvement of the deformities were achieved. Less pain was experienced postoperatively. Patients considered the position of the hand as cosmetically more acceptable.
