Abstract

The principles of developmental care that optimize the long-term outcomes of our vulnerable premature babies apply to neonatal health professionals wherever they work in the world. Protecting and supporting sleep is a core part of the neonatal integrative developmental care model and is vital in promoting positive outcomes and neonatal well-being. This chapter focuses on the protection and promotion of sleep within the context of developmental care. Brain development as underpinning anatomy and physiology will be covered followed by a discussion of sleep protection and strategies to be employed in line with the integrated model. These comprise optimizing the environment, comfortable positioning, preventing stress and pain, protecting skin integrity, ensuring adequate nutritional status and integrated working with families.
