Abstract

Stroke is a leading cause of death en disability and atherosclerotic carotid stenosis is one of the main cause of stroke. Treatment of asymptomatic carotid stenosis has been subject of discussion for decades and the role of carotid revascularization remains unclear in the current era of effective medical therapy.

This thesis describes the current treatment strategies for asymptomatic carotid stenosis. It explores risk factors for procedural (30-day) complication following carotid endarterectomy and stenting.
