Abstract
When an intoxicated patient is admitted to a hospital, the first treatment usually is preventing further absorption of the ingested material. Possible techniques are emesis, gastric lavage, multiple administrations of activated charcoal in combination with a laxative and whole bowel irrigation. Efficacy studies of these measures are scarce. Recently, a number of position papers has been published on the role of gastrointestinal decontamination techniques for the intoxicated patient. These position papers are summarised and commented.
