Dr. Vahid Arbabi is an Assistant Professor in the field of Orthopaedic-BioMechanics at the Department of Orthopedics of University Medical Center Utrecht. Vahid obtained his PhD degree from the department of BioMechanical Engineering of TU Delft. He was awarded the runner-up prize for the Best Doctoral Thesis Award in Biomechanics by the European Society of Biomechanics. The topic of the thesis was estimation of the mechanical and physical properties of articular cartilage, which are crucial in proper understanding of the commencement and progression of osteoarthritis. He developed advanced computational models and applied them to indentation and diffusion tests based on micro-computed tomography to determine the Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, permeability, solute diffusivity, and fixed charge density of articular cartilage. An alternative approach was introduced based on combined artificial neural networks and finite element models to enable experimentalists using advanced computational models for interpretation of experimental data with regard to diffusion in soft tissues.
As an assistant professor, he is involved in several projects at a European scale such as the APPROACH consortium or an international scale such as the World Coach Consortium and the TOFA-Predict project.
