    Biography

    Dr Thomas van Sloten works as an clinical-scientist (Assistant Professor) at the Department of Vascular Medicine of University Medical Centre Utrecht, the Netherlands. He studied Medicine at Maastricht University and Clinical Epidemiology at VU University Amsterdam, both in the Netherlands. He did his PhD research at the Department of Internal Medicine of Maastricht University Medical Centre, Maastricht, the Netherlands. Thomas also worked at the National Institutes of Health (USA) and at INSERM U970, Paris Cardiovascular Research Center (France). 


    The focus of his research is the epidemiological study of the role of vascular dysfunction in the development brain diseases that are common among individuals with diabetes, including stroke, dementia and depression. A key element of his research is that he combines multiple research domains, including epidemiology, endocrinology, physiology, neuropsychiatry and neuroimaging science. He has also always combined research with clinical work. Thomas has been awarded with various grants, including a Veni grant (Dutch Research Council NWO talent scheme), a Dekker clinical scientist grant (Dutch Heart Foundation) and a Diabetes Fonds Fellowship (Dutch Diabetes Research Foundation). His scientific work has been published in leading journals in the field, such as Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology and JAMA.
