Biography

Most of the scientific work of Roel Coutinho has been on infectious diseases, especially epidemiology of HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis and sexually transmitted infections. The results of this work have been published in > 600 publications in peer-reviewed journals and presented at numerous meetings throughout the world. Up till now 67 PhD students finished their thesis under his supervision.

Between 1995-2005 he coordinated the Amsterdam Cohort Studies on HIV and AIDS, an ongoing collaborative research project of the Amsterdam Municipal Health Service, the Academic Medical Center and the Central Laboratory of the Netherlands Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (Sanquin). Between 1994-2005 he was the project leader of the Ethiopian Netherlands AIDS Research Program (ENARP), a collaborative project with the Ethiopian Health and Nutrition Research Institute (EHNRI) in Addis Ababa financed by The Netherlands Ministry of International Cooperation. Between 1994 and 2004 he was the project leader of a collaborative EU-China project on Sexually Transmitted Infections. At this moment he is the scientific coordinator of the Ndlovu research collaboration, a recently started multidisciplinary research project in Elandsdoorn (South-Africa) concentrating on the interaction between HIV and chronic diseases of the University of Utrecht, the Ndlovu group and Witwatersrand University (South Africa). He is also the project leader of the Hepatitis C treatment program in Cameroon

Head Department of Public Health and Environment, Municipal Health Service of Amsterdam. The department was responsible for surveillance and control of infectious diseases and environmental health in the city of Amsterdam (approx. 700,000 inhabitants) and had about 200 employees. Included were: an STD-clinic, tuberculosis control, control of general infectious diseases, a public health laboratory, control of rats and other vermin, quarantine of Schiphol airport, a research unit on infectious diseases

Specialization in medical microbiology (virology) at the department of virology of the University of Amsterdam. Research work mainly on cytomegalovirus as a possible cause of tumor growth

 

April 1975 - July 1975

Short term consultant for the World Health Organization in Bangla-Desh (smallpox eradication program). Responsible for program in the province of Rajshahi (5 million inhabitants)

General doctor in charge of a 40-bed hospital in Ziguinchor (South-Senegal). This hospital was run by the provisional government of Guinée-Bissau (PAIGC)
