Biography

Prof. Dr. Robert Stokroos is professor and chair of the department of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck surgery at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC Utrecht). He is a board member and Principal Investigator of the UMC Utrecht Brain Center. As chairman of the Surgical Specialties division, he was part of the Uteam of the UMC Utrecht for quite some time.

His clinical specialization includes otology and neuro-otology, with a particular focus on skull base surgery.

His research aims at improving the quality of life of patients with sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus, specifically focusing on survival and regeneration of hair cells and spiral ganglion neurons, treatment of tinnitus, and approaches and improvement of surgical techniques.

Prof. Stokroos obtained his medical degree cum laude and specialized in Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery in 1997 in Groningen. He received his PhD from the University of Groningen in the same year with a thesis on Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

Before his appointment at UMC Utrecht, he was affiliated with the Maastricht University Medical Center as professor of otology, neuro-otology and skull base surgery, and as PI at the School for Mental Health and Neuroscience (MHENS).
