Michiel van der Flier (Utrecht, 1970) studied medicine at Utrecht University. As a student he was a guest investigator at the Rockefeller University, New York, US. He trained as a paediatrician at the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital/UMC Utrecht and St Antonius Hospital Nieuwegein. He earned his PhD in 2003 at Utrecht University on the thesis “VEGF in sepsis and meningitis”. He did his subspecialty training in Paediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunology at the Sophia Children's Hospital-ErasmusMC in Rotterdam and at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children in Londen. From 2009 to 2018 he worked as a consultant in Paediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunology at the Amalia Children's Hospital-Radboudumc in Nijmegen and from 2014 to 2018 he served as program manager of the subspecialty . In 2017-2018 he worked half a year as Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College, in Londen. Starting November 2018 he returned to the UMC Utrecht. He combines the care for children with infections and immunodeficiencies in the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital and the Princess Maxima Centre for Paediatric Oncology with research and teaching.
