Biography

Jan C. Grutters (1966) studied Medicine at the University of Nijmegen, and was trained in Respiratory Medicine at St. Antonius Hospital Nieuwegein and University Medical Center (UMC) Utrecht, the Netherlands. In 2001 he was awarded an ERS Research Fellowship at Imperial College and Royal Brompton Hospital London, resulting in his Thesis: ‘Genetic polymorphisms and phenotypes in sarcoidosis’. Since 2002 he works as a pulmonologist at St. Antonius Hospital, where he is head of the Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILD) Center of Excellence. He is also a member of the Lung Transplant Team at UMC Utrecht. From 2009 to 2011 he was head of training Pulmonology & Tuberculosis at St. Antonius Hospital. Additionally, he has been a Professor of ILD at University Utrecht since 2010, with his research focusing on genetics, biomarkers and novel therapies for progressive lung fibrosis, sarcoidosis, and various auto-immune, exposure-related and ultra-rare ILD. Throughout his career Prof. Grutters has supervised over 25 PhD students, authored and co-authored more than 300 scientific articles, and is regularly invited as speaker or chairman at international medical and scientific conferences. Lastly, he is a member of the editorial board of Sarcoidosis Vasculitis and Diffuse Lung Diseases, and President Elect of the World Association of Sarcoidosis and Other Granulomatous Disorders.
