    Biography

Hugo de Jong obtained his degree in (Applied) Physics from Eindhoven University of Technology in 1997, graduating with a thesis on the quantitative measurement of atherosclerosis using MRI. He subsequently pursued his doctoral research at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU), focusing on quantitative SPECT reconstruction, under the supervision of Prof. Freek Beekman and Prof. Max Viergever, and successfully defended his PhD thesis there.

After completing his clinical training as a medical physicist with a specialization in nuclear medicine, he was appointed as a staff member at the Amsterdam PET Center (VUmc). In 2006, he returned to UMC Utrecht as Head of the Medical Physics group in the Department of Radiology, where he also established a formal residency program for medical physics training. In this role, he combines clinical responsibilities, including the introduction of new imaging technologies and quality assurance, with driving innovation and education within the department.

His research focuses on CT and X-ray imaging, nuclear medicine physics, and hybrid imaging, with a strong emphasis on translating technological innovations into clinical practice. He has been awarded several prestigious research grants, including a VIDI grant from the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and an ERC Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council.

In 2018, he was appointed Professor of Medical Physics in Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at UMC Utrecht, where he continues to bridge clinical practice, research, and education to advance patient care and imaging science.

Primary Interests: Physics of medical imaging, Teaching and Innovation.  Trainer of Medical Physics Residents.
