Biography

Guy Rutten is professor of Diabetology in Primary Care and Director of the training-course for executives in Diabetology in primary care. His research focuses on type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and cardiovascular complications and diabetes primary care. He is (co-)author of more than 325 original articles in peer reviewed journals and supervised 13 RCTs on T2DM and wrote 10 books on diabetes, guidelines, clinical reasoning and the patient-doctor relationship. He supervised or is supervising 20 PhD students. In 2010 he distributed the book ‘Diabetes Care, from Science to Practice’, based on the scientific work of his research group, to all Dutch primary care practices (ZonMW sponsorship). He was an author of the 2013 guidelines on T2DM from the Dutch College of General Practitioners. In 2010 he was nominated for the Dutch Diabetes Research Prize. He was on the writing committee of the global NAVIGATOR study and on the Global Expert Panel of the global LEADER trial. From 2006-2008 he was Editor-in-chief of Primary Care Diabetes, from 2005-2011 he chaired the European Primary Care Diabetes Study Group and from 1996 to 2017 the Dutch Diabetes Primary Care Expert Group. He was member of the scientific Advisory Board of the Dutch Diabetes Fund(2004-2010). Besides, he worked as a GP from 1982 until 2014 for at least two days/week.
