Biography

About
Gersten Jonker started medical school in 1995 at the Rijkuniversiteit Groningen. After obtaining his MD in 2002, he specialized in anesthesiology (2003-2008, St Antonius Hospital Nieuwegein) and subspecialized as a pediatric anesthesiologist in Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital at the UMC Utrecht (2008-2009) and the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow, UK (2009-2011). In 2011 he joined the staff of the department of anesthesiology at the UMC Utrecht. He is the program director of anesthesiology residency training since 2022. Now working as a general anesthesiologist, his focus is on medical education and specialist training in anesthesiology.

Research
Gersten completed a PhD in medical education. In 2021 he succesfully defended his PhD thesis titled "Buidling a continuum: competence development from student to medical specialist". His research interests are the educational continuum and competency-based training and assessment.
