Biography

Bas L.A.M. Weusten (1967) is professor at the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at UMC Utrecht, The Netherlands. He has as graduated from medical school at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. He has written his PhD thesis on gastroesophageal reflux disease and esophageal perception from 1992 to 1995. After his traineeship in gastroenterology he became a staff member at St Antonius Hospital in Nieuwegein, the Netherlands in 2002.

 

In 2011 he became professor of Innovative GI Endoscopy at the University Medical Center in Amsterdam. In 2017 he moved to Utrecht, where he became appointed as  professor of GI Endoscopy at the University Medical Center Utrecht. He chaired the Dutch society for gastrointestinal endoscopy for many years.

 

His main focus in both clinical work and research is on endoscopic management of early neoplasia of the upper GI tract. He leads the endoscopic esophageal research group in the RAKU (Regionaal Acedemisch Kanker Centrum) collaboration. He has been involved in several national and international guidelines, and chaired the ESGE Position Statement on the Endoscopic Management of Barrett’s Esophagus.
