Biography
Prof dr Annelien Bredenoord is a professor of Ethics of Biomedical Innovation at the University Medical Center Utrecht. Her research, consultancy and teaching is focused on the ethical issues in emerging biomedical technology and translational medicine.
She is particularly fascinated by the rapid developments in genetics/genomics, regenerative medicine, stem cell research, biobanking, surgical innovation, Big Data and the associated ethical and societal challenges: how to translate biomedical innovations from basic research into clinical care and society in an ethically sound way?
She published widely in those fields and is member of several (inter)national committees among which the Ethics Committee of the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR), The Young Academy of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), The Young Health Council, The National Indication Committee Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis, The NIAS Lorenz Advisory Board, L 'Oreal UNESCO For Women in Science program, and UMC Utrecht’s Research Ethics Committee (METC).
She obtained a VENI grant to study the ethics of translational stem cell research and supervises several PhD-students and medical students. She teaches ethics at the Medical School of Utrecht University.
Annelien has been political active for the Dutch social-liberal party D66 for 15 years. As of 2015, she is member of the Dutch Senate (Eerste Kamer) on behalf of D66.
