During her traineeship programme, Carmen Cocca will be part of Neonatal research programme at the Department of Neonatology at UMC Utrecht.
Neonatal research programme focuses on better understanding of the impact on brain development in critically ill newborns with systemic illnesses, brain injuries and congenital (cardiac) anomalies. This research is focusing on use of neonatal brain imaging and bedside brain monitoring. Researchers are developing bench-to-bedside perinatal research strategies, in order to find effective neural rescue therapy to reduce the incidence and severity of neurological impairment caused by perinatal problems. Neonatal research programme is also part of multidisciplinary long-term follow-up. Aim of this follow-up study is to monitor children where preterm birth or any other condition (perinatal brain injury, congenital heart anomalies) might put them at risk of developing neurological and developmental deficits in childhood.
